MOZI: This indicates a movie theater (or cinema as the Brits would say). The
Budapest Sun lists 27 theaters showing movies in English with Hungarian subtitles.
They range from multiplex theaters in malls to one-screen art houses. There are
new listings online at BudapestSun.com every Thursday. The actual address are
listed every week in the Budapest Sun newspaper with the listings. A warning,
however. Their directions are not always accurate.
Some theaters offer cheaper prices before four each day. Prices range from 500
to 1400 forints. All seats are reserved, even in the art theaters. Popcorn and
soda combos are usually less than the price of the ticket. Nobody cares if you
carry in your own refreshments.
PUSKIN: A special note. As far as I know, the only mozi that accepts credit
cards to buy tickets. Nice, older four-screen theatre.
KOSSUTH FOUR: Across the street from the Westend Mall, often plays the same
movies as the mall theatre, but at half the price. Who knows why.
PALACE MOM PARK: Just down the hill from Moszkva Ter or Deli Pu. Red-line metro
stops on the 61 tram. Sometimes is the only place in town showing a new release
in English.
BEM (in Buda on the 4 or 6 tram) and VORSMARTY (at Kalvin Ter on Blue metro)
are nice single-screen theaters.
The CORVIN is a convenient multi-screen right at Ferenc Korut on the Blue line.
There's a statue in front to commemorate the fighting that took place at this
location during the 1956 revolution.
EUROPA, SZINDBAD,and MUVESZ are all older, small multi-screen theaters. The
mall theaters are all multi-screen, stadium-style seating just like back in
the States.
Cultural note about comedies. Sometimes you may not be able to hear the punch
lines in the comedies because the Hungarians will read the joke first and their
laughter drowns out the English sound track!
Some of the smaller, older theaters even have a place to check your coats. (Just
like at the opera.)
